**The TMP117 is a digital temperature sensor with ±0.1 °C maximum error from −20 to 50 °C, 16-bit resolution and an I2C interface, so a robot can read battery, motor or ambient temperature with no analog front end.** It runs from 1.7 to 5.5 V and uses a typical 3.5 µA at one conversion per second. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TMP117 datasheet SNOSD82D.

The datasheet notes that the low power use keeps self-heating from affecting the reading. The accuracy applies to the chip; the reading on a robot also depends on where the sensor sits and how well it is coupled to the thing you are measuring.

## Using it on a robot

- Mount it against the battery pack or motor housing, not in the air stream of a fan, if you want that part’s temperature.
- Wire SDA and SCL with pull-up resistors, and choose the ADD0 connection to avoid a clash with another sensor on the same bus.
- Use the alert pin to warn the controller when a limit is passed, instead of polling.
- The chip itself is a small WSON or DSBGA part, so most people buy it on a breakout board.
