Classic Bluetooth serial works only on the original ESP32, not on the S3 or C3. Check your chip.
What the message means
Newer chips have only BLE. Even on the original chip, an old pairing on the phone can block a new connection.
Fix it in this order
- Check your chip. Classic Bluetooth serial needs the original ESP32.
- Call SerialBT.begin(“name”) in setup and look for that name on the phone.
- Remove the old pairing from the phone and pair again.
- Check the code partition has enough room, since Bluetooth uses much flash.
- Do not run Wi-Fi heavy code and Bluetooth together unless needed.
- Use BLE instead if your chip has no classic Bluetooth.
Why it happens
Classic Bluetooth, the profile the BluetoothSerial library uses, exists only on the original ESP32. The S2 has no Bluetooth, and the S3 and C3 have BLE only, so the same sketch compiles on some boards and then never shows up on the phone. Check the exact chip printed on the module.
The library also adds a large amount of code, which is why a small partition scheme can make it fail to build or start. A stale pairing on the phone from an earlier sketch with the same name is a common cause of a connection that will not complete.
If you see this, do this
| You see | Do this |
|---|---|
| Name never appears | Chip has no classic Bluetooth, or begin missing. |
| Pairs once, never again | Remove the old pairing. |
