A fresher robotics resume is not a list of courses. It is evidence that you can build something, test it, and explain what happened when it broke.
Most robotics resumes from Indian campuses look the same: the same online courses, the same final-year project, the same list of software. Recruiters skim for evidence of ownership. This guide shows the structure that works, the bullet format that carries weight, the portfolio that backs it up, and the mistakes that get a resume filtered out before a human reads it.
What a recruiter actually checks
| Check | Time spent | What passes |
|---|---|---|
| Role match | A few seconds | Skills and project language close to the job description |
| Evidence | Seconds | Projects with a result, not a task list |
| Basics | Seconds | Clear contact details, one page, readable file |
| Depth | Only if the first three pass | One project explained well, with a number |
That order matters. A brilliant project buried under ten irrelevant lines never gets read. Lead with the evidence for the role you are applying to.
The one-page structure
- Name, phone, email, city, GitHub and LinkedIn. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status.
- A two-line summary naming the role you want and your strongest evidence.
- Skills grouped by category: programming, embedded, robotics frameworks, CAD, tools.
- Projects, two or three, each with a result.
- Internship or work experience, if any.
- Education with degree, institute, year and percentage or CGPA.
- Competitions, publications or certifications that are relevant and verifiable.
One page is not a rule for people with ten years of experience. For a fresher it is a discipline: it forces you to choose your best evidence instead of listing everything.
Writing project bullets that carry weight
A weak bullet describes activity. A strong bullet describes a problem, what you did, and a measurable result. You do not need a dramatic result; you need a specific one.
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Worked on a line follower robot using Arduino. | Built a PID line follower that completed a 12 m track in 9.4 s; cut lap time 22 percent by adding derivative damping after the robot oscillated at 3 m/s. |
| Used ROS for a mobile robot project. | Wrote a ROS 2 node fusing wheel odometry and IMU at 50 Hz; reduced heading drift from 14° to 4° over a 20 m run. |
| Made a robot arm with servo motors. | Designed and printed a 4-DOF arm with 300 mm reach and 250 g payload; added inverse kinematics and repeatability of ±2 mm at the gripper. |
| Did a project on computer vision. | Deployed YOLO on a Raspberry Pi 5 to detect 3 object classes at 11 FPS; moved inference to a smaller input size to gain 4 FPS with a 2 percent accuracy drop. |
If you do not have numbers, measure something simple: track length, cycle time, repeatability, detection rate, current draw, cost of the bill of materials. A measured number is still a number, and it proves you tested.
The skills section, done properly
Group skills so a recruiter can match them to a job description in one glance. Do not use progress bars or star ratings; they communicate nothing and invite arguments about what “80 percent C++” means.
Programming: Python, C++, embedded C
Embedded: ESP32, STM32, Arduino, I2C, SPI, UART, PWM
Robotics: ROS 2, Nav2, URDF, Gazebo, MoveIt 2
Vision: OpenCV, YOLO, camera calibration
CAD and tools: Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Git, Linux, MATLABOnly list what you can defend in an interview. If you used a library once in a tutorial, leave it out or mark it honestly as basic. Interviewers ask “tell me where you used this” and the answer “in a course” ends the conversation.
The portfolio that makes the resume believable
A GitHub link on a resume is only useful if the repositories support the claims. Three good repositories beat twenty forks.
- Each repository has a README with a photo or short video, the problem, the parts, the wiring or architecture, and how to run it.
- Code is organised, with a comment where the logic is non-obvious and no committed build folders.
- The project has a results section: speed, accuracy, repeatability, cost, or what failed.
- At least one project shows debugging, not just a happy path.
- A one-page video link is often more convincing than code, because it shows the thing moving.
Do not publish a project you cannot explain line by line. Recruiters increasingly ask specific questions about the repository, and a copied project collapses in five minutes.
Formatting for applicant tracking systems
Many Indian companies, especially larger ones, screen resumes with software before a person sees them. That software reads text, not design.
- Send a PDF unless the portal asks for a Word file.
- Use standard headings: Skills, Projects, Experience, Education.
- Avoid tables, text boxes, columns and icons for contact details.
- Use the same keywords as the job description, without stuffing.
- Name the file with your name and role: Firstname_Lastname_Robotics_Engineer.pdf.
- Test by copying the text out of the PDF; if the order is scrambled, the parser will scramble it too.
Matching the resume to the role
Robotics hiring in India splits into a few broad tracks, and each wants different evidence. Sending one generic resume to all of them is the most common reason for silence.
| Track | What they want to see | Project to lead with |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded and firmware | C, microcontrollers, interrupts, communication protocols | Motor control or sensor driver written without a library |
| Robot software | ROS 2, C++ or Python, Linux, navigation | Autonomous navigation or sensor fusion on a real robot |
| Computer vision | OpenCV, deep learning, deployment on edge hardware | Detection or inspection running on a Pi or Jetson |
| Automation and PLC | Ladder logic, industrial protocols, safety basics | A small cell with interlocks, HMI and a wiring diagram |
| Mechanical design | CAD, tolerances, materials, manufacturability | A mechanism with drawings, BOM and a built prototype |
| Application and service | Robot programming, customer communication, troubleshooting | An integration or commissioning project with a fault log |
Internships, competitions and certifications
Relevant experience beats a longer list of certificates. An internship at a system integrator, even an unpaid one, gives you exposure to real cells, real customers and real faults that no course can simulate.
Competitions such as national robotics contests and student design challenges are useful when you can state the constraint and the outcome: the weight limit, the track, the placement, the team size and your specific role. A certificate with no project behind it adds little.
Online certifications help most when they fill a specific gap the job asks for, such as a ROS 2 course for a software role or a PLC course for an automation role. List the project you built with it, not just the certificate name.
Salary expectations, handled honestly
Entry-level robotics salaries in India vary widely by city, company type and skill depth. Core manufacturing and automation roles often start lower than software product roles, while strong embedded, ROS and computer vision skills command a premium.
Do not put a number on the resume. In the interview, give a range based on current listings for the same role and city, and say what would move you within it. Check fresh listings on job boards the week you interview rather than relying on a figure from a year-old article.
Mistakes that get a fresher filtered
- A three-page resume with school achievements and hobbies.
- An objective statement that says “seeking a challenging role”.
- Skill bars and star ratings.
- Listing software you touched once.
- Projects with no result and no link.
- Group projects where your contribution is unclear.
- Typos in the email address or phone number.
- Claiming a certification you did not complete.
- Sending a scanned image PDF that no parser can read.
A one-week plan to fix your resume
- Day 1: pick two target job descriptions and list the exact skills they name.
- Day 2: choose three projects that prove those skills and write them in problem, action, result form.
- Day 3: rebuild the resume into one page with standard headings.
- Day 4: clean the top GitHub repository and add a README with photos and results.
- Day 5: record a 30-second video of the best project working.
- Day 6: export the PDF, copy the text out, and check the reading order.
- Day 7: get one senior student or a working engineer to review it and cut everything they question.

How long should a fresher robotics resume be?
One page. A fresher rarely has enough relevant material to justify two pages, and a second page usually dilutes the strongest evidence rather than adding to it.
Should I put my CGPA on the resume?
Yes if it is strong or if the company asks for it during campus placement. Otherwise put the degree, institute and year, and leave the number off if it is below the typical cutoff, but never misstate it.
Do certifications matter for robotics jobs?
They help when they fill a specific gap the role asks for, but a project built with the skill matters more. List the project alongside the certificate, and only claim what you actually completed.
How do I show robotics projects without work experience?
Use two or three projects with a clear problem, what you built and a measured result. Link to a repository or a short video, and be ready to explain the failures and how you fixed them.
Can I get a robotics job with only Arduino experience?
Yes for some entry roles in automation, service and test, but the strongest openings expect C or Python plus either ROS or industrial protocols. Build one project that adds that layer before applying widely.
A resume claim about firmware is tested in the interview, so rehearse the embedded fundamentals before you list them.
