Young engineer working on a robot in a workshop

Robotics freshers in India are hired into six broad role families, and the family you enter depends on the evidence you can show rather than on your branch. A firmware interview is won by someone who can explain why a bus read failed. A field service interview is won by someone who has installed something and written it up. Here is what each family does in month one, the proof that gets the interview, and broad posted pay ranges with their limits.

Six role families, and what month one looks like

Role familyWhat you actually do in month oneThe proof that gets the interview
Embedded firmwareBring up an existing board, wire a sensor, fix a brown-out, write a driver from a reference manual. You read more of the manual than you write code in week one.A C repository for one microcontroller family, a logic analyser capture, and one bug you fixed with a measurement.
Robotics softwareInstall the stack on Linux, get a node talking to hardware, reproduce a reported fault from a recorded log, tune parameters until the behaviour is repeatable.A package that builds on a clean machine, a recorded bag file, and a before-and-after result you measured.
Controls and automationRead a sequence of operations, wire inputs and outputs, tune a loop or a motion profile, prove that the machine stops safely when it should.A step response plot from before and after tuning, and a safety interlock you can describe without notes.
Application and field serviceInstall, calibrate and repair machines at customer sites, train an operator, write the service report that the next engineer will read.A service log from an internship or a lab, and a wiring diagram you can trace without help.
Mechanical designModel brackets and fixtures, check tolerances, chase a fabricator, fix the fit on the second revision because the first one did not fit.A CAD assembly with drawings, one tolerance decision you can justify, and a part that fitted.
Testing and validationBuild a test rig, run repeatability trials, break the machine deliberately, log what failed and at what point.A test plan and a results table with real numbers, including the cases that failed.
Role descriptions are general patterns across Indian employers, not a description of any one company.

Two things surprise new graduates. Most month-one work is maintenance and integration on a product that already ships, and the deliverable is usually a fixed bug or a document. A candidate who expects to design an untried system in the first quarter reads as unprepared.

The skills behind each family

  • Embedded firmware: C with pointers, structs, bit masking and fixed-width integers; one microcontroller in depth; UART, I2C and SPI at the timing level; interrupts and watchdogs; a multimeter and a logic analyser.
  • Robotics software: Linux command line, Python and enough C++ to read a driver, Git, ROS 2 nodes and topics, coordinate frames, and the patience to read a log line by line.
  • Controls and automation: PID tuning on a real plant, sensors and actuators, PLC ladder logic where the local market asks for it, electrical safety, and testing an interlock rather than assuming it.
  • Application and field service: electrical troubleshooting, reading a schematic, calibration, customer communication, and reports another engineer can act on.
  • Mechanical design: parametric CAD, tolerance basics, materials and fasteners, 3D printing limits, and costing a part before you design it.
  • Testing and validation: experiment design, measurement uncertainty, data logging, repeatability, and honest reporting of failures.

Broad pay bands, by family and city tier

Commonly posted ranges for entry roles are roughly ₹3–6 LPA in several families, but the spread inside a family is wider than the spread between families. A company that sells its own machine pays differently from one that sells engineer hours. Treat the table as a planning range.

Role familyMetro, product companyTier-2 city, service or integratorWhat moves you up fastest
Embedded firmware₹4–8.5 LPA₹3–6 LPADrivers written from a datasheet, and debugging evidence
Robotics software₹6–12 LPA₹4.5–8 LPAA working stack you can rebuild and explain
Controls and automation₹3.5–7 LPA₹2.5–5.5 LPACommissioning experience and safety knowledge
Application and field service₹3–5.5 LPA₹2.5–4.5 LPAMachine-specific knowledge and travel willingness
Mechanical design₹4–7 LPA₹3–5.5 LPAParts that fit, drawings a fabricator accepts
Testing and validation₹3–5.5 LPA₹2.5–4.5 LPATest plans and defensible data
Indicative 2026 planning ranges based on how entry roles in these families are commonly advertised in India. These are not survey data, and city, company stage and specialisation change the number.

Ask for the range in the first conversation, not the fourth. A company that will not state a band until an offer exists is telling you something about how it handles information. Internship stipends are a separate market and not a salary signal.

Which family fits your branch?

Branch filters campus eligibility more than the work. Employers use branch cut-offs because they are cheap to administer, not because a mechanical graduate cannot write firmware. Off campus, the portfolio decides.

  • ECE and EEE: embedded firmware, controls and automation, testing. Your course covers signals, microprocessors and power, so the gap is tooling and code discipline.
  • Mechanical: mechanical design, application and field service, controls in machine-building companies, and integration work where the mechanism is the hard part. Add basic electronics and one scripting language.
  • CSE and IT: robotics software, perception, simulation and testing. The gap is hardware reality: timing, power, noisy sensors and a machine that does not restart when you want it to.
  • Any branch: field service and application engineering hire on attitude, travel willingness and troubleshooting. They are a common entry point into the sector.

What gets a fresher rejected in the first ten minutes

  • A resume listing twelve technologies with no artefact behind any of them.
  • A project you cannot open, rebuild or explain when asked.
  • No answer to “what failed, and how did you find out?”
  • Tutorial code presented as your own design, which falls apart on the second question.
  • Not knowing what your own build cost, or where the parts came from.
  • Wiring you cannot trace on a photograph of your own robot.
  • Applying for a firmware role with a web dashboard portfolio, or the reverse.

The last item is the easiest to fix: match the first three resume lines to the tasks in the job description.

What to do this month

  • Reopen one build, photograph the wiring, and draw the pin map by hand against the code.
  • Write a one-page test log: what you tested, the numbers you measured, what failed, what you changed. The free project pack has the structure.
  • Record a 60-second video that shows the robot working and one case where it does not.
  • Write your bill of materials in rupees, with where each part was bought.
  • Learn five numbers from your main sensor’s datasheet: range, accuracy, supply voltage, current and update rate.
  • Prepare one failure story in situation, action, result form and rehearse it aloud for two minutes.
  • For firmware roles, be able to explain volatile, a watchdog and one bus timing diagram without notes.
  • For software roles, rebuild your workspace from a clean machine while someone watches. If it breaks, that is your next task.
  • Apply to five roles a week in the family you prepared for, rewriting the first three resume lines each time.

Our final-year project list has builds that produce this kind of evidence, and the report format guide shows how to write a test section. If software interests you, start with ROS 2 for beginners. The careers page has the wider view of tracks and study routes.

Common questions

Can I get a robotics job with a diploma or without a B.Tech?

Yes, most often through technician, service, assembly and test roles, which hire on demonstrated skill. The ceiling is lower at the start and the route to design work is slower, but field service experience with documented troubleshooting is a real path into application engineering. Some employers still filter on degree, so check the eligibility line before you apply.

Does a certificate or online course help?

It helps when the course ends in something you built and can defend. A certificate naming a tool you have never used adds little, and interviewers routinely ask certificate holders to explain a basic failure. Put the project first and the certificate second.

Is a field service role a dead end?

Not if you use it deliberately. Service work puts you in front of failure modes that a design team may never meet, and that transfers into application engineering and product support. It becomes a dead end when the work is only part swapping and nobody writes anything down.
