The CD74HC4067 is a 16-channel analog multiplexer and demultiplexer: four select lines connect one of sixteen analog lines to a common pin, with 70 Ω typical on-resistance at 4.5 V and break-before-make switching. It lets one ADC pin read sixteen sensors in turn. It is the larger cousin of the 8-channel CD74HC4051. Figures are from the Texas Instruments CD74HCx4067 datasheet SCHS209D.

What the datasheet promises

ItemDatasheet value
Channels16, bidirectional: any analog line can be an input or an output
Supply, HC types2 V to 6 V
Supply, HCT types4.5 V to 5.5 V, with direct LSTTL input logic compatibility
On-resistance70 Ω typical at VCC = 4.5 V; 60 Ω typical at 6 V
SwitchingBreak-before-make; 6 ns typical at 4.5 V
EnableWhen high, disables all switches to their off state
Analog rangeAnalog voltages across the supply voltage range
Temperature−55 to 125 °C
PackagesSOIC-24, SSOP-24 and TSSOP-24

Because the on-resistance is tens of ohms, it works best into a high-impedance input such as an ADC, not a heavy load. Select lines come from the microcontroller, so one multiplexer costs four GPIO pins plus the enable and the common pin.

Using it on a robot

  • Read sixteen analog sensors, for example a line-follower array, through one ADC pin.
  • Switch one sensor at a time and wait a moment for the signal to settle before sampling.
  • Use the HC type with a 3.3 V logic supply within the 2 V to 6 V range.
