The INA199 is a bidirectional, zero-drift current-shunt monitor with a voltage output, a common-mode range of −0.3 V to 26 V and a maximum offset of ±150 µV, so it can work with shunt drops as low as 10 mV full-scale. It is a more precise relative of the INA180. Figures are from the Texas Instruments INA199 datasheet SBOS469H.

Bidirectional means it can measure current flowing either way through the shunt, using the REF pin to set the output at zero current. The low offset lets you use a small shunt, which wastes less power.

Using it on a robot

  • Sense battery or motor current on a 12 V or 24 V robot with a small shunt resistor.
  • Choose the gain so the largest expected current, including stall, stays within the ADC range.
  • Set the REF pin voltage for a bidirectional measurement, as the datasheet describes.
  • For motor drives with fast PWM edges, see the INA240.
