The ADS1118 is a 16-bit, SPI-compatible analog-to-digital converter with an internal voltage reference, oscillator, programmable gain amplifier and a temperature sensor, running from 2 V to 5.5 V at up to 860 samples per second. It is the SPI alternative to the I2C ADS1115, and its temperature sensor helps with thermocouple cold-junction compensation. Figures are from the Texas Instruments ADS1118 datasheet SBAS457F.

The datasheet shows a K-type thermocouple example that uses the internal temperature sensor for cold-junction compensation. Single-shot mode cuts the average current a lot when you read only now and then.

Using it on a robot

  • Read a thermocouple or thermistor with one small chip, as in the datasheet example.
  • Use SPI where the I2C bus is busy or you want a faster interface than I2C.
  • Use the faster 12-bit ADS1015 when speed matters more than resolution.
