The TPS6213x family are synchronous step-down converters that take 3 to 17 V in and deliver up to 3 A at 0.9 to 6 V, switching at a typical 2.5 MHz so the inductor can be small. That range covers a Li-ion pack and a 12 V rail. It is the synchronous, higher-frequency alternative to the TPS54331. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TPS6213x datasheet SLVSAG7F.

The QFN package has no leads on the sides, so it is not a part to hand-solder; most robots use it on a ready-made module or a reflowed board. The datasheet gives the inductor and capacitor choices for each output voltage.

Using it on a robot

  • Make 5 V or 3.3 V from a 12 V supply or a multi-cell Li-ion pack within the 17 V limit, with less heat than a linear regulator such as the LM7805.
  • Use the power-good output to hold a microcontroller in reset until the rail is up.
  • Check output ripple on a scope before powering sensitive analog parts.
