The TPS6300x family are single-inductor buck-boost converters that run from 1.8 V to 5.5 V and keep a steady output, for example 3.3 V, whether the battery is above or below it, with up to 96 percent efficiency. That suits a single Li-ion cell or two to three alkaline cells powering a 3.3 V robot controller. The family has the TPS63000, TPS63001 and TPS63002. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TPS6300x datasheet SLVS520C.

What the datasheet promises

ItemDatasheet value
Input voltage1.8 V to 5.5 V
Output voltageFixed and adjustable options from 1.2 V to 5.5 V
Output current1200 mA at 3.3 V in step-down mode (VIN 3.6 to 5.5 V); up to 800 mA at 3.3 V in boost mode (VIN above 2.4 V)
EfficiencyUp to 96 percent
Mode changeAutomatic transition between step-down and boost
Quiescent currentLess than 50 µA, with a power-save mode at light load that can be disabled
Switch current limit1800 mA typical average
ShutdownLoad is disconnected from the battery
TemperatureFree-air −40 to 85 °C
PackageVSON-10 (DRC), 3 × 3 mm

Output current falls as the input drops, as the two figures for step-down and boost above show. For a larger design use the TPS63020, which handles more current; for a boost only design see the TPS61023.

Using it on a robot

  • Hold 3.3 V from a single Li-ion cell as it discharges below 3.3 V.
  • Check the inductor and capacitor values in the datasheet application section; they affect stability.
  • Disable power-save mode if switching noise at light load matters to an analog sensor.
