The TPS62840 is a step-down converter that uses just 60 nA of quiescent current and delivers up to 750 mA from an input of 1.8 V to 6.5 V. It is built for devices that sleep for most of their life and then power a radio, such as a battery sensor node. At light load it still reaches 80 percent efficiency at 1 µA of output current from 3.6 V to 1.8 V. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TPS62840 datasheet SLVSEC6D.

The STOP pin stops switching immediately, which removes switching noise for a quiet sensor measurement. The converter saves most energy in sleep, so it matters most for a node that wakes briefly; for a motor robot a bigger converter such as the TPS62130 is the better fit.

Using it on a robot

  • Power a 3.3 V or 1.8 V microcontroller and radio from a coin-cell-class or Li-ion source.
  • Use the STOP pin to silence switching during an analog measurement.
  • Choose the output voltage with the VSET resistor, as set out in the datasheet table.
  • For a lower-current linear option see the TPS7A02.
