The TLV755P is a small low-dropout regulator that sources 500 mA from an input of 1.45 V to 5.5 V, with 25 µA typical quiescent current, 1 percent output accuracy and a dropout of at most 238 mV at 500 mA for a 3.3 V output. It is the higher-current relative of the TLV702. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TLV755P datasheet SBVS320D.

Quiescent current25 µA typical
Dropout238 mV maximum at 500 mA (3.3 V output)
Accuracy1 percent maximum at 85 °C

Output capacitorStable with a 1 µF ceramic capacitor
FeaturesSoft-start with monotonic rise, foldback current limit, active output discharge, thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout
PackagesSOT-23-5 (DBV), SOT-23-5 with thermal pad (DYD), X2SON-4 (DQN) and WSON-6 (DRV)

The active output discharge pulls the output low when the regulator is disabled, so the load starts from a known state. For larger input-output differences, heat in an LDO equals the voltage drop times the current, so use a switching converter first.

Using it on a robot

  • Power a 3.3 V microcontroller and sensors from a single Li-ion cell or a 5 V rail.
  • Use the enable pin to switch the rail from a GPIO.
  • Choose the thermal-pad SOT-23-5 package if the load is near 500 mA.
