The TPS7A02 is a low-dropout regulator that draws only 25 nA typical for itself, can supply 200 mA, and takes 1.5 to 6.0 V in, so it suits battery robots and sensors that spend most of their time asleep. It keeps that low current even when in dropout. Compared with the LM1117 it is for small, low-power rails rather than higher current. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TPS7A02 datasheet SBVS277C.

It is a fixed-output part: you buy the output voltage you need rather than setting it with resistors. The very small packages are hard to hand-solder, so most people use it on a ready-made module.

Using it on a robot

  • Power a microcontroller or sensor that sleeps for long periods from a single cell or a 3.3 V to 6 V source.
  • For higher current or higher input voltage, use a buck converter such as the TPS63020 instead.
  • Place a 1 µF or larger ceramic capacitor on the output.
