The ADS1015 is a 12-bit, I2C-compatible analog-to-digital converter with four single-ended or two differential inputs, a programmable gain amplifier, and sample rates from 128 SPS to 3.3 kSPS from a 2.0 to 5.5 V supply. It is the faster, lower-resolution sibling of the ADS1115. Figures are from the Texas Instruments ADS101x datasheet SBAS473F.

Choose the 12-bit ADS1015 when you need more samples per second, for example reading a fast sensor or several channels in a loop; choose the 16-bit ADS1115 when resolution matters more than speed.

Using it on a robot

  • Add analog inputs over I2C to a board that has few ADC pins, such as the Pico W.
  • Use the comparator to raise an alert when a battery voltage drops under a limit.
  • Set the PGA range so the largest expected input stays within it, and check the input limits in the datasheet.
