The TLV702 series are fixed-output low-dropout regulators that supply 300 mA with 2 percent accuracy, 35 µA quiescent current and a dropout of 220 mV at full load for a 2.8 V output. It is a small, quiet 3.3 V or 2.8 V rail for sensors and microcontrollers. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TLV702 datasheet SLVSAG6D.

It is a linear regulator, so the dissipated power is the input-output voltage difference times the load current; for a large step down from a 12 V rail use a switching converter such as the TPS62130 first.

Using it on a robot

  • Power a 3.3 V microcontroller or sensor from a single Li-ion cell, where the low dropout lets the cell discharge further.
  • Use it after a switching regulator to clean up a rail for an analog sensor.
  • Place the input and output capacitors close to the pins, as the datasheet layout section says.
