The TMP235 is a linear analog temperature sensor with a positive slope of 10 mV/°C and 500 mV at 0 °C, working from −40 °C to 150 °C on a 2.3 V to 5.5 V supply. You read it with any ADC pin, so it needs no bus and no library. It is a simple alternative to a thermistor, and to digital parts such as the TMP117. Figures are from the Texas Instruments TMP235 and TMP236 datasheet SBOS857E.

What the datasheet promises

ItemDatasheet value
OutputPositive slope 10 mV/°C, 500 mV at 0 °C (typical)
Temperature range−40 to 150 °C
Accuracy±2.5 °C maximum across the range; ±0.5 °C typical from 0 to 70 °C (A2 grade) or ±1 °C typical (A4 grade)
Supply voltage2.3 to 5.5 V
Quiescent current9 µA typical
Power-on time800 µs typical, which suits power-cycled designs
Output driveClass-AB output, up to 500 µA, for loads up to 1000 pF; short-circuit protected
TMP236The higher-gain sibling: 19.5 mV/°C, 400 mV at 0 °C, −10 to 125 °C, 3.1 to 5.5 V supply
Packages5-pin SC70 and 3-pin SOT-23

Because the output is a voltage proportional to temperature, the accuracy you get also depends on your ADC reference and on noise on the wire. As a calculation from the figures above, temperature in °C is (output voltage in mV − 500) ÷ 10.

Using it on a robot

  • Watch the temperature of a motor driver or battery pack with one ADC pin.
  • Power the sensor through a load switch such as the TPS22918 and read it after the 800 µs power-on time to save battery.
  • Use a digital part such as the TMP117 where you need finer accuracy.
